Castaic District Continues Solar Panel, QS Improvements During Winter Break

Winter Break starts on Monday for the Castaic Union School District, and though students and teachers will go home for the holidays, it’s a busy time of year for the district.

The district’s solar panel project is well underway, and construction will continue through the break. Superintendent James Gibson said in a district newsletter that the structural steel for the panels is expected to be complete by the time students return in the spring.

The entire project is scheduled to be finished in February.

The district also continues to implement improvements under Bond Measure QS.

The measure, which was passed by voters on Nov. 6, 2012, allows the district “to issue and sell bonds of up to $51 million in aggregate principal amount to provide financing for the specific school facilities projects,” according to the bond proposition.

The district is currently resurfacing its school’s playgrounds, in addition to the area under play equipment, such as swings and slides.

Staff are also planning for the summer 2014 improvements, including air condition replacement, restrooms, additional buildings, expanded parking and a Castaic Middle School locker room.

In 2013 to date, the district has spent more than $2.9 million on Measure QS improvements.

Each classroom, library, multipurpose room and staff development room is now equipped with a SMART Board, in addition to other technology, like sound systems, video and cable systems, document cameras and interactive software.

The new technology has been a welcome addition, according to Kim Baljet, third grade teacher at Northlake Hills Elementary.

“…It puts the world at my, and in turn, my students’ fingertips,” she said. “Now that I have one, there is no way that I would ever teach without one.”

The district Board of Trustees recently held their annual organizational meeting on Dec. 12. The spring semester will start with David Huffaker at the helm as president of the board.
