Red Ribbon Week takes place from Oct. 22-26, where students have the opportunity to learn from community experts about the dangers of smoking, vaping and using other narcotics.

“This is a serious topic, but it’s important that we are engaging it in a positive way that gets the students engaged and talking about the dangers of drugs, smoking and vaping,” said Castaic Union School District Superintendent Steve Doyle.

This year, Castaic Middle School is having three major events that are intended to engage the students in being drug-free, with a focus on “vape-free” activities in their lives.

On Monday, students heard from experts in the field of drugs and the dangers associated with them, such as members of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station J-Team.

On Tuesday, Deputy Bill Velek and J-Team Member Travis Sabadin of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spoke on the effects of vaping and how easy it can be for young people to be convinced to start vaping.

On Friday, the week is set to conclude in a “Don’t get WRAPPED up in Drugs” fundraiser, where students, parents and teachers will have an opportunity to tape the Castaic Middle School principal to a pillar, according to officials.

For $5, donors are set to get a long piece of duct tape that they can wrap Principal Brauneisen to a pillar in the middle of the quad, where he will stay during the entire lunch hour.

Donors also have the opportunity to receive a small piece of tape for $1, which they can put on the principal.

The funds that are gathered are set to go toward drug and alcohol prevention and treatment in Santa Clarita.
