During the month of September, Castaic Union School District staff sought a credit rating from S&P Global Ratings. The rating agency is nationally recognized and well respected in the investor community, according to officials

On September 27, 2018, S&P upgraded the district’s current bond rating from “A-” to “A” as a result of the District’s improved financial position and high-quality tax base.

The rating was also assigned a positive outlook, which according to officials means that with continued maintenance of strong financial operations, the bond rating could be further upgraded in the near future.

The rating upgrade will have a meaningful benefit for CUSD taxpayers as it will allow the District to issue bonds and fund much-needed facilities at a lower cost of borrowing, similar to achieving a lower mortgage rate with a higher credit score, according to officials.

The long-term effect of the rating upgrade is also significant as it will reportedly result in a lower cost of borrowing for future Measure QS bonds.

Under Proposition 39 law, all Measure QS funds are locally-controlled, not used for administrators’ salaries and are under supervision from an independent citizen oversight committee.
