Members of the COC Astronomy and Physics Club NASA HASP Project , Patrick Gagnon and Hunter Napier, are in Fort Sumner, New Mexico where they are expected to launch their SOLARIS payload thousands of miles into Earth’s atmosphere.

The goal of the experiment is to curb the amount of “harmful acids” in the stratosphere using a water-like solution, according to Patrick Gagnon, project manager.

“COC has never been able to attend a launch so we’re also very excited to see what Fort Sumner is like and hopefully be there to watch liftoff in person,” Gagnon said.

This year’s project is a non-pressurized solution, meaning it is necessary for COC students to attend the launch to add a solution into the experiment chamber.

“The experience so far has been incredible,” Gagnon said. “We have shared our experiences with the community and hopefully inspired a few students along the way.”

The students are anticipating a successful launch and are waiting for everyone back in California to see our payload enter the stratosphere, Gagnon said.

“With the two of us, we can handle anything that happens,” he added.
