The COC First Year Promise program was initially introduced in the fall of 2017, and offers full-time students the opportunity to attend the college tuition- and fee-free for their first academic year.

To qualify, students must be a California resident and have graduated from a high school within the William S. Hart Union High School District or a neighboring district in the previous year, according to officials.

Eligible students are required to enroll in a year’s worth of courses and attend a week-long summer “boot camp” that will give them the skills needed to succeed as a college student.

Additionally, students will receive full counseling services, complete a career assessment and priority registration, according to campus officials.

Students would also receive benefits from the Open Educational Resources for textbooks, peer mentors and other learning benefits, such as ongoing academic counseling and student support, according to officials.

In addition to the $100 voucher, students in the program also receive a free parking pass or monthly bus pass in addition to free printing at the Student Center computer lab that is funded Associated Student Government.

Last year, approximately 164 out of 260 students that participated in the program earned and maintained a GPA average of 3.0 or higher. College officials are predicting 350 students will be accepted into the program for 2018, according to officials.

Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible. All requirements must be completed by May 11.
