Fortine, who was the board’s vice president, introduced the motion. MacGregor nominated Fortine to continue on to a second term as vice president of the board.

Jenkins was first elected as a board member in 1984, serving on the board for nearly three decades.

Jenkins has 30 years of service as a board member at the college and experience in taking part in accreditation evaluations.

From a previous story:

Jenkins also manages a three-physician family practice, according to College of the Canyons’ website.

The Hart High grad also served as board president in 1988 when the college hired COC Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook, and will be serving her eighth term as board president. Jenkins has lived in the Santa Clarita Valley since 1964.

“I am honored to be chosen by my colleagues to serve as president of the Board of Trustees,” Jenkins said.  “It is a privilege to serve on the board, and provide leadership to the college as it continually expands its service to the community.

College of the Canyons will undergo a voluntary review of its accreditation status in 2014, a process that occurs every six years to ensure the institution is offering the highest quality education possible.

I look forward to a great year ahead,” added Jenkins, “as we increase access to students, improve student success and enhance services to our local business community.”

Bruce Fortine was selected as vice president and Steve Zimmer was chosen as clerk. College of the Canyons Chancellor Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook was named secretary/parliamentarian.

The complete 2014 officer slate is as follows:

* Michele R. Jenkins – President

* Bruce D. Fortine – Vice President

* Steve D. Zimmer – Clerk

* Joan W. MacGregor – Member

* Michael D. Berger — Member

Previously, Michael Berger had served as president of the board for the last two years. Joan MacGregor had served as vice president in 2013.

  1. It’s just too bad that Michele doesn’t support the fantastic faculty at College of the Canyons. Her comments during board meetings make it clear that she doesn’t have much regard for the great professors that are the heart of the college.
