COC Is Inviting The Santa Clarita Nursing Community To A Special Event

College of the Canyons officials invite current nursing students and nurses from the Santa Clarita Valley to a special event focused on issues related to patient care and the future of the nursing profession.

The event “What do Nurses Need to Know? Nursing Scope of Practice” will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC) located at College of the Canyons.

Serving as the event’s keynote speaker will be Tricia Hunter, R.N., M.N., current Executive Director of the American Nurses Association California and Hearing Healthcare Providers of California.

In her presentation Hunter will cover a range of topics that both current nurses and nursing students need to be aware of regarding safe patient care and other emerging issues related to the nursing profession.

Also scheduled to present is Dr. Mary Foley PhD, R.N., F.A.A.N., a clinical professor at the University of California, San Francisco School of Nursing.

While Foley’s presentation will be specifically focused on the future of nursing, both presentations will cover nursing from a legislative and nursing practice point of view.

At the conclusion of Hunter’s presentation the two speakers will host a roughly 30-minute Q-and-A session with audience members.

The event “What do Nurses Need to Know? Nursing Scope of Practice” is open to the public. General Admission is free to all local nursing students (identification required).

Nursing students planning to attend are reminded that this is a professional nursing event, and are asked to please arrive on time and dressed in professional attire.

The PAC is located on the College of the Canyons Valencia campus at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road, in Santa Clarita.

This event is sponsored by a grant from the Song Brown Special Programs Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, with additional grant funding received from the Deputy Sector Navigator Grant of the California Community Colleges Workforce and Economic Development Division, hosted by College of the Canyons.

More About Tricia Hunter, R.N., M.N.

Tricia Hunter is a registered nurse and the Executive Director of the American Nursing Association.

Hunter’s career as a public servant began when she was elected to California State Assembly. Governors Pete Wilson and George Dukmejian also appointed Hunter to various positions within state government.

As a member of the California State Assembly, Hunter was the vice chair and lead Republican on the Education Committee, the Committee on Health and the Human Services Committee.

Hunter served on the California Medical Assistance Commission for six years and as a special assistant to the Governor in the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, during the Pete Wilson administration.

More About Mary Foley, PhD, R.N., F.A.A.N.

Mary Foley has been a registered nurse for more than 40 years, a clinical professor at the University of California, San Francisco’s School of Nursing and the director of the Center for Nursing Research and Innovation.

Foley has worked with the Collaborative Alliance for Nursing Outcomes since 2004 and is currently a member of the board of directors. During her time with CALNOC, Foley developed an expertise in medication safety.

Foley has also been a former president of the American Nurses Association and the National Student Nurses Association.

Foley also continues to write and lecture about safe care for workers and patients nationally and internationally.
