Santa Clarita families were invited to the COC Valencia campus to help celebrate National Manufacturing Day, on Oct. 4.

Students and parents were able to enjoy several interactive activities including a speaker panel discussion and displays on advanced technology careers at the COC Student Center.

Many Santa Clarita organizations were featured at the event to help educate students and parents about the potential rewarding careers in manufacturing and advanced technologies.

Approximately 1,000 students from across the Hart School District made way to COC to participate activities conducted by many SCV advanced technology partners such as JPL, Lockheed Martin, and PPG.

Parents and students were able to listen to a panel presentation, led by James McKinney of Google’s Startup Grind.

McKinney and panelist discussed the skills and characteristics employers are seeking in the current manufacturing job market.

Displays and activities explaining opportunities in design, engineering, fabrication, robotics, and distribution were also available.

Dr. Marianne Doyle, Director of Career Technical and Adult Education with the William S. Hart Union School District spoke about the importance of bringing current manufacturing technologies to students.

‘This is so critical in order for parents and students to learn more about manufacturing and to really get past some of the previous notions of what manufacturing looks like,” said Doyle. “I think many of us have still have in our minds that old factory floor and it’s changed over the past several decades.”

The William S. Hart Union High School District, College of the Canyons, the City of Santa Clarita, the SCV Economic Development Corporation, and California Manufacturing Technology Consulting, has hosted the event in Santa Clarita for 4 years consecutively.

Niamani Knight, founder of S.T.R.E.A.M. Kids Expo, attended past Manufacturing Days as a student, but this year she presented.

“For the past three years I’ve attended Manufacturing Day and this year I am excited to bring the S.T.R.EA.M. Kids Expo concept of interactive learning to the event,” Knight said. “I can’t wait for my peers to explore some of the amazing companies I’ve had the privilege of working with in the areas of Manufacturing and Technology. Kids will not only be blown away by what they see at the event, they will connect the dots of their education to career by having “real deal” conversations with industry experts. With over 200,000 jobs available in the manufacturing industry, students should know this is a booming career option.”

  1. Sounds like some easy work for the homeless and wefare parents needing work. The inmates do it for 25 cents an hour. Santa Clarita should open a factory for them .maybe they can make California souvenirs in California so we don’t have to get made in China ones.
