Newhall Parents Continue Threats Of Walk Out Over Calendar Complaints

A group of Newhall School District parents upset the elementary school calendar doesn’t match up to the high school one plan to attend this week’s board meeting, continuing a “walk-out” threat.

The group of parents showed up at the last Newhall School District board meeting, along with several teachers, with both sides discussing the concerns and advantages of Newhall’s unique calendar separately.

During the meeting, several parents expressed complaints over the fact that other elementary school districts’ calendars match the Hart district’s junior high and high school calendars much more closely than Newhall’s, making child care and vacation arrangements difficult for parents with kids in both districts.

District officials explained a deference to teachers in setting the academic calendar, as the “educational and instructional experts” for the district.

Teachers who showed up to last month’s meeting explained the extra week at spring break and a week off in the fall, allows for a shorter summer, which reduces “summer learning loss,” and provides the best conditions  for students in a trimester schedule who undergo regular testing — requirements of elementary school districts.

“We have and will continue to welcome parent input,” said board President Christy Smith. “They are included on the agenda tonight for that reason. We are also seeking to broaden the conversation to include data on student learning, the economic considerations around average daily attendance funding, and the legal parameters of collective bargaining, in order to give these concerned parents a complete picture of all of the factors impacting our decision as a board.”

In response to the district’s reaction last month, the parent group is continuing their threat of pulling children out of class from Oct. 2-3.

Parents have suggested that using the “power of the purse” to force Newhall School officials to the bargaining table. School districts are funded by attendance figures, so a school would not receive money for every day a child is missing, hurting its financial bottom line.

When told of the concern, district officials warned parents there would likely also be unintended consequences, such as potential cuts to arts and music programs, if attendance, or a lack thereof has a significant impact on revenue.

“This isn’t about being insensitive to the importance of family time,” Smith said, echoing the sentiments of some of the other board members and teachers who spoke in defense of the calendar, and shared their experiences with the split schedules, as well, from their own families, at the last meeting where there was an impromptu calendar discussion. “What we are balancing though, is what teachers tell us is what’s most effective for your child’s learning,” Smith said, “so we will be weighing all those considerations.”

The districts’ calendars do not align for 26 days, compared to two different days for the Castaic Union School District (which has elementary and junior high grades at Castaic Middle School), which recently aligned with Hart; 12 different days for the Saugus Union School District and 18 days for Sulphur Springs.

  1. That’s it! Keep your kids out of school and take them to Disneyland to show them the value of a strong education!

  2. What are these parents teaching their kids? No wonder our kids feel entitled. If you don’t get your way, then protest. STUPID! Let them walk and punish their kids for it. Unbelievable

  3. Let’s get real here. The sole reason the calendars don’t mesh is totally the work of the teachers and their union. The NSD calender is determined based upon the days-off wishes of the NSD teachers and nothing else. The teacher’s union is currently in the driver’s seat on this issue.

  4. Exactly Dennis. This is what being an American is all about Tina. When the unions go too far telling parents that they don’t give a crap about how inconvenient their new schedule is then you protest! This is a justified protest and I doubt parent want to look at their brats for an extra 6 hours on a weekday but the point is, is to hurt them in their pocketbook. I would keep my kids out of school until they actually came to the table and rather than gave patronizing “sorry, not sorry” comments, actually came to a compromise. Who said they were going to take their kids to DL or give their kids a fun day off from class mamavear (ugh)? My kids would spend the school day learning from Kahn University and probably return to class smarter than the rest of their peers.

  5. I happen to think it is important that schools/school boards remember that these parents/students are actually their customers. They should pay some attention to what the community really needs. If all the other schools in the area can match up 50% or more than this, than there is some real bull going on here. A little too much union in the teaching I suspect. It is not about teaching kids about being self entitled as much as it is to stand up for what is right and just in this world. I am not in that area and I am not affected, but I will not put parents down for standing up for their rights as tax paying citizens. Parents need to stop being bullied by school boards. Parents should have more power when raising their own kids. Too much “government” even going on at this level. Good luck parents!

  6. I’m not sure what meeting Perry Smith is talking about, but after our second positive, productive meeting with the NSD School Board on Sept 19, the Fix Your Calendar group is withdrawing a threat of walkout as a gesture of goodwill and in support of our teachers. We are optimistic that the Newhall School Board has heard parent concerns and will take them to the negotiating table regarding calendar issues moving forward.

We believe that community support of the alignment issue through petitions, emails, and comments have been key in opening up dialogue. We are very pleased and grateful to live in a community that cares so deeply about our children and look forward to a smooth resolution of the matter as the final calendar is negotiated through spring of 2018.
