Among children from immigrant families, preschool improved English proficiency, reading, and math skills according to a new report  published by researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

The study also found that formal preschool boosted children’s social and emotional skills.

The report, principally authored by Assistant Professor of Education Michael A. Gottfried, was made possible through the Kevin and Kim Bacon Award.

These results come on the heels of Duke University’s study of two North Carolina early childhood initiatives, which showed that participation reduced children’s likelihood of being placed in special education by the end of 3rd grade by 39% and found a “spillover” effect benefiting other children.

In response, Early Edge California President Deborah Kong issued the following statement:

“These findings underscore the extensive benefits, both academic and social, of high-quality preschool and early childhood programs to California’s richly diverse communities. Every child in California deserves the early experiences that will prepare them for success, and every parent deserves to know their child is learning and developing in a safe, quality environment.”

Early Edge California works to ensure all children have the early experiences necessary to be successful learners by the end of 3rd grade, setting them on a path to college and career readiness.
