Designed to help students keep the skills and knowledge they learned during the school year, the four-week program also offers fun activities like daily watercolor art classes, a reader’s theater class and a conversational language workshop.
“There has been a lot of good research done about summer learning loss– kids losing skills over the summer and going back to school just out of step and having to catch up,” said Dawn Oliver, Tutor Doctor’s director of education. “Especially if they haven’t had the strongest year the year prior, they’re in a position of weakness rather than a position of strength… So we thought we’d really tackle that problem proactively.”

The program is set to take place Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon with breakfast included, and will cover the basics of math, reading, writing and art for all grades.
Participating students will also vote on a conversational language to be featured the last day of the program, choosing from 10 languages Tutor Doctor tutors specialize in, ranging from Spanish to American Sign Language.
Tutors will also hold a single one-on-one tutoring session with each student throughout the summer based on an assessment of their needs.

If ongoing one-on-one tutoring better suits the needs of some students, Tutor Doctor tutors are also set to continue their signature in-home tutoring sessions in Santa Clarita throughout the summer and into the start of the next school year.
Owner Steve Grill said, “The kids might be on summer vacation– but we’re not.”
