Saugus Union Talks Bond Measure, Leadership, Back To School Night

Saugus Union School District officials are meeting over the next two days to discuss team-building, back-to-school nights and, most importantly, a bond measure and facilities need. Saugus Union officials are hosting an all-day management seminar at the district office Monday in Valencia from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Tuesday, the board plans to swear in David Powell at 7:30 p.m., whom board members nominated July 18 to replace Stephen Winkler. Saugus Union Names David Powell To School District Governing Board

The Saugus Union School District governing board nominated David Powell, a Cal Lutheran program director, to the vacant board seat Friday. Powell replaces Stephen Winkler, who had his seat vacated due to allegations he was maintaining a residence outside of the district’s boundaries. There were 15 12-minute candidate interviews in which the prospective candidates were asked eight questions on topics such as the Common Core Standards Initiative and the Local Control Funding Formula, as well as how the prospective board member would handle an upset parent.

Saugus Union School District Releases Candidate List For Empty Seat

Saugus Union School District officials have a list of 16 candidates for a vacancy on their governing board, officials said Wednesday. Saugus Union School District officials will be making their decision Friday after interviewing all the candidates who submitted valid applications. “The board is looking forward to welcoming a new board member who will provide community leadership and advocacy on behalf of our 10,000 students in our 15 award-winning schools,” stated Paul De la Cerda, SUSD board president, in a news release.

Judge Finds For Saugus Union In Effort To Oust Stephen Winkler

Stephen Winkler is no longer on the Saugus Union School District governing board, according to a default judgment issued Monday in Los Angeles. Saugus Union School District officials have sought to remove Winkler for more than a year, after his seat was vacated with a 4-1 vote last June. “(Winkler), having been regularly served with process and having failed to appear and answer the verified complaint in quo warranto filed herein... it is ordered, ajudged and decreed... the defendant has usurped, intruded into, and unlawfully held and exercised the office of trustee.”
