The contest gave elementary school students the chance to reflect on their favorite things about the city and submit a unique entry for a chance to win a party on the city’s official birthday, according to Santa Clarita officials.

City staff selected Charles Helmers Elementary as the winning school because of the amount of student involvement and what the students were able to give back to the Santa Clarita community, according to officials.

Their submission was a week of giving, during which students gave a variety of different items to 30 different charities and organizations in Santa Clarita.

Some of the items they collected and distributed included stuffed animals for children at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital and pet supplies for local animal shelters.

“The students and staff at Charles Helmers Elementary School really impressed us with their school-wide participation and the volume of their generosity,” Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth said. “We were honored to have so many students, parents and teachers attend our council meeting and we are looking forward to celebrating with the entire school at their party on Dec. 15.”

Students were asked to come up with whatever representation of 30 things the students wanted, in honor of the city’s big day.

Nearly two dozen entries were received and showcased.

The students opted to do everything from 30 acts of kindness to 30 jumping jacks. Students drew pictures of their 30 favorite places in the city and even learned how to sing Happy Birthday to Santa Clarita in 30 different languages.

Charles Helmers Elementary School will be the location for the City’s birthday party. On Dec. 15, 2017 the school will celebrate with the Santa Clarita City Council, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, Los Angeles County Fire Department and California Highway Patrol.

The celebration will include food, fun, entertainment and information on what 30 years of cityhood has brought to Santa Clarita.

“The 30 Things for 30 Years contest was such a clever way for the city to share the celebration of its 30th birthday with the students of Santa Clarita,” said Dr. Joan Lucid, superintendent of the Saugus Union School District. “We are so pleased to be included in the celebration… The children, staff and PTA at Helmers worked very hard on this
and we are so proud of this achievement.”

All of the submissions for the 30 Things for 30 Years contest will be available for viewing on the City’s website at santa-clarita.com/30Years.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
