In the letter, Lucid described her 48 years as an educator and thanked all those who “encouraged me, supported me and celebrated with me through this absolutely amazing career.”

The longtime educator earned her Masters degree in Education with an emphasis in Reading Improvement from California State University, Northridge in 1983. In 1991 she became the Principal of Cedarcreek Elementary and in 1997 she was promoted to the position of Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction for the Saugus Union School District. She earned her Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership a year later in 1998 from the University of La Verne.

Lucid, over her nearly four decades with the SUSD, has taken on roles including teacher, project coordinator, principal, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction. All of these roles led up to her position as Superintendent. She was chosen to lead the district in 2011.

“It’s been an amazing career with the district,” Lucid told KHTS Tuesday, shortly after submitting the letter. “I take a look at all the things that have changed … All of the awards and all of the things that have gone on. Im so pleased with all the technology we’ve put in the schools.”

When she started with the district, there were only seven schools. But over her tenure, the number of Saugus Union Schools has more than doubled, to 15 campuses. Lucid thanked all those who helped raise the standards of education within the district.

“It’s hard to put it all into words,” she said. “It’s all about a team. Nothing happens on its own.”

The biggest accomplishment of her seven year tenure as superintendent, Lucid said, was the technology initiative she spearheaded into classrooms with a bond measure to pay for interactive whiteboards and other classroom tech.

“Being able to get the tech into the hands of our teachers and into the hands of our children,” she said. “Our teachers create magic for children.”

Despite a six month deadline on her tenure, Lucid is in no hurry to finish any initiatives or complete any projects.

“It’s the school year, and you continue to do all the things you’ve been working on,” she said. “We’ve got our initiatives set.”

Over the next several weeks, she said, the Saugus Union School District’s board will meet and begin the process of combing through applicants for the next superintendent of the district.

But after that, Lucid said, she plans to spend more time with her family.

“A lot of things went into play (when I decided on retiring),” she said. I have grandchildren I want to spend time with. And i want to do that while I’m healthy.”
