After eight years of service to North Park Elementary School, crossing guard Evan McDonald retired, but not before being honored by the school, district and city for his effort to keep the young students safe.

“He was the smiling face in front of the crowd, making sure students got to school safely,” said North Park Principal Sandy Brunet, “so we wanted to take some time today to honor him.”
McDonald is the grandparent of four North Park students: two graduates and two current. The retired crossing guard “had no idea” that he would be recognized for his service, believing that he was attending an award ceremony for his grandchildren.
However, the assembly began with Brunet thanking him for his dedication and the students singing “You are My Sunshine” to McDonald.
After, Saugus Union School District Superintendent Joan Lucid spoke on McDonald’s kindness.
“I know each day that I’ve gone by and anytime that I’ve waved, you’ve waved right back at me,” she said. “I don’t even know if you knew who I was, but always a wave.”
Lucid added that his care was instrumental in getting students safely to the school.
“Our children are the beneficiaries of your kindness and all of the good things that you have offered,” she said.
Mayor Bob Kellar had similar sentiments, saying, “this city and all of the wonderful things we are able to accomplish are because of the citizens. Mr. McDonald has given so much to the safety of the children in the Saugus area.”

“Evan has been an integral part of these students lives for so many years,” said Brunet. “He’s made sure that they cross the street safely, he’s gotten to know the families each morning as they come to school, and it’s so nice to come together and honor this man that has made such a difference in so many children’s lives.”
