Saugus Union Board Member To Resign At End Of September

Saugus Union School District governing board member Doug Bryce announced he would be stepping down at the end of September due to a work opportunity.

Doug Bryce made the announcement at Tuesday’s board meeting, about three months after he said he planned to leave the Santa Clarita Valley because he was offered “the perfect job” in San Diego.

“I did talk to the rest of the board and the cabinet about it,” Bryce said. “They’re putting together a timeline for the replacement and it’s going to follow the same process as we did when we replaced (ousted board member Stephen) Winkler and got (David) Powell.”

Bryce, who was elected in November by 49 votes over Chris Trunkey, said he planned to move in May, but he was waiting to sell his house, and he would keep his board seat until the sale.

He said that hasn’t happened, yet, but the time was right to step down “for personal reasons.”

“I’m still working out of the house and spending as much time in Santa Clarita as possible,” Bryce said. “I just don’t think I’ve been as effective as I’d like to be.”

He felt “somebody who has been as effective as I’ve been in my time, should be in that position,” he said. “I just feel that it’s time.”

He mentioned school site visits and open houses as some of the duties he hasn’t been able to make it to recently, as part of the reason.

Bryce was first elected to the board from 1993-97, and then he was re-elected in eight years later.

He’s leaving his job at Crane Aerospace for a job at Honeywell, where he’ll be working with “process improvement activities and quality improvement activities.”

Bryce’s replacement would be the board’s second appointment. Powell was chosen by the board to replace Winkler in July.

Winkler’s seat was vacated by the board last year amid allegations he was maintaining a residence outside of the district’s boundaries.

Powell, who has four children, one who’s enrolled in the Saugus Union School District, is an instructor and program director at Cal Lutheran for the Master of Public Policy and Administration program.

Bryce said he was proud of the district’s staff and the leadership of Superintendent Joan Lucid, as well as the high level of education the district has been able to provide.

The board is working to build support for a $150 million bond measure to support the upgrading of facilities districtwide.

The measure will be on the ballot for voters in November.

“I’ve really enjoyed it, and I really love the Santa Clarita community,” Bryce said of his time on the board. “It’s been a part of my life for 27 years — it’s just sometimes, there’s just a time to move on and this is it.”
