Local Santa Clarita Valley International School (SCVi) students have planned a trip over Spring Break to aid the citizens of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria devastated the area.

Hurricane Maria hit the Carribean island of Puerto Rico on September 20th, 2017. Since then the island has been struggling with access to electricity, water, food and other basic necessities.

The SCVi students are currently planning to give supplies to any Puerto Rican who needs them. The students plan to organize efforts to clean up parts of the island, replant agriculture, installing generators to provide electricity, repairing property and serving food to locals in need.

The drive is being organized by the students and they are eager to help in rebuilding Puerto Rico. Currently about 10 to 20 students are hoping to attend.

Money raised will go towards those in need. Solar powered items, water filtration systems, generators, repair parts and other supplies plan to be purchased for the island.

The students plan to expand their charitable efforts to other areas of Puerto Rico if the need arises.

“What moved our kids most is hearing that, even 4 months after the hurricane, many people are still without electricity and some schools have still not been able to open for the 2017-2018 school year,” said Matt Watson, Director of Maker Outreach at iLEAD Schools.

“Due to this urgent need, we are starting this year in Puerto Rico, but would like to make this an annual effort. We are already working with the City of Santa Clarita’s Sister Cities team, SCVIP, on a similar mission to Ecuador in 2019,” according to Watson.

“We’ve done many trips abroad,” said Amber Raskin, Executive Director of Business Development at iLEAD schools. “This is the first one service oriented.”

“We do have a very service-minded and philanthropic community at SCVi and iLEAD and we’re pleased to see the kids planning a trip to go visit communities in need that are a little further from home,” said Raskin.
