Sulphur Springs School District and Mint Canyon Elementary School officials have expressed concerns about traffic at the intersection of Sierra Highway and Educational Highway near the entrance of Mint Canyon Elementary, according to the agenda item. The intersection is most crowded during the school’s arrival and dismissal times.
Due to the high rate of motorist’s speeds on Sierra Highway, it is difficult for parents to make left-hand turns from Educational Highway onto Sierra Highway, according to the agenda item.
“In order to address this concern and enhance traffic flow, traffic signals are needed at the subject location,” said Antonovich in the agenda item.
Antonovich called for the installment of a new traffic signal, according to the agenda item. He also asked that the director of Public Works report back within 30 days for a schedule to install and activate the signal.
“It typically takes 15-18 months to design and construct the traffic signal unless there are unforeseen delays such as right of way acquisition,” said Mike Kaspar, public information officer with the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works. “Typically, only lane closures will be needed during the construction of the signal.”
Now that the agenda item has been approved, engineers will go out to the site and access the environment to come up with an exact cost.
“The typical traffic signal cost will vary between $250,000 to $300,000 depending on the complexity of the signal or if right of way acquisition is needed,” Kaspar said. “The cost for this proposed signal may be closer to $300K to $350K since it may require additional pavement, bus pads, etc.”
