Cliffe, the author of “Shaping Up Your Character, A to Z-Mathematically,” was a teacher in the Sulphur Springs School District between 1971 and 2004.
She taught at Leona Cox, Valley View and Fair Oaks Community Schools, and has worked with the city of Santa Clarita on their “Character Counts!” program and developed the company Character Building Concepts, through which she publishes her books.
All of her books and songs teach a lesson about character, Cliffe said.
Her first book, “The Mysterious Balloon,” teaches children the value of patience.
“Alowishes Unusual Birthday,” demonstrates the importance of being dependable, according to Cliffe’s website.
Cliffe has already begun piloting “Shaping Up Your Character” among local schoolchildren.
The book teaches basic shapes while promoting character qualities like cooperation, sportsmanship and the Golden Rule.
Cliffe said that the book has helped students engage with what they are learning and has even encouraged them to come up with their own additions–different shapes that represent character values.

There will be a booksigning with Cliffe and Davis at Valley View Community School on Friday between 3:45 at 5 p.m., open to all children, parents and teachers in the SCV.
Cliffe decided to begin writing children’s books for a couple of different reasons.
Her mother is also an author and helps critique her work.
Cliffe was inspired to write specifically about character by tragic events like the infamous shootings at Columbine High School and Virginia Tech, she said.
She sees the importance of educating the heart and not only the mind, she said.
Cliffe also wants to encourage children who are interested in writing, illustrating or animating.
“(Writing) is a great way to communicate a feeling and emotion and to make a difference in the world,” she said.
Right now, she has another book in the works, one that teaches geography through her own world travels since she retired from teaching.
Cliffe’s books are available on her website and on Amazon.com. A portion of the proceeds from all books sold on her website are donated to the Sulphur Springs School District.
