While students of all ages can benefit from one-on-one in-home tutoring sessions with certified Tutor Doctor tutors, junior high and high school students in need of extra help with executive functioning skills are ideal candidates for this unique program.
“It’s all about task initiation, it’s about task completion,” said Director of Education Dawn Oliver. “We use color coding, which is very popular in offices, so it’s something that actually transfers into your life.”

A key aspect of the program is teaching students how to be efficient academic planners by using a pre-developed Tutor Doctor planner that differs from most traditional school planners.
“One of our students had a planner and he was writing in this very small box all of the different subjects and all of the different assignments,” Oliver said. “You couldn’t really tell what the assignments were, and because there was a pre-sized box he felt he had to fit that day’s assignments into that… When I come into the home with the ‘academic gameplanner,’ I literally tell them we’re throwing that idea away.”
The “academic gameplanner” resembles a stenography or legal pad with only a center divider that creates two large columns. Students are asked to bring it with them to school and write assignments on one side and the due date on the other.

“These are life skills that they will have for the rest of their lives: to be a critical thinker, to think independently and to be a problem solver,” added franchise owner Steve Grill.
Santa Clarita parents interested in learning more about the Academic Gameplan program can schedule a free consultation with the Tutor Doctor, which involves a brief assessment and discussion of goals with both the parent and student.
