The event on March 17, attended by all six William S. Hart District high schools, was sponsored by the Winter Guard Association of Southern California (WGASC).

“The arts are thriving in the Santa Clarita Valley,” Lorraine Kohagen, advisor for the Valencia team. “All of the schools have very successful programs.”

Winter guard is an indoor color guard sport derived from military ceremonies or veterans organizations ceremonies, according to the WGASC.

Unlike traditional color guard, winter guard is performed indoors, usually in a gymnasium or an indoor arena. Performances make use of recorded music rather than a live band or orchestra.

The extracurricular activity takes place during the winter and spring semesters, said the Valencia advisor.

“Winter guard prepares these students for adulthood,” Kohagen said. “These skills we build during the season, you can’t learn in the classroom.”

Each of the color guard teams performed a four to five minute unique program that they have spent countless hours rehearsing and perfecting, she said.

“The future is bright with the commitment, camaraderie, and talent of our district performers,” Kohagen said.
