Castaic High School’s Founding Principal Melanie Hagman Joins KHTS For Special Broadcast

Melanie Hagman, who was named as Castaic High School’s founding principal in March, recently joined KHTS Co-Owner Carl Goldman for a special broadcast to talk about her vision for the highly anticipated school, which is slated to open for the Fall 2019 semester.

Currently an assistant principal at Hart High School, Hagman is dividing her time between Hart and Castaic, sitting in on construction meetings and working with the Hart District and College of the Canyons on plans for the new school.

“We will be starting with just freshmen, and we will roll out a grade level each year until we are fully vested 9-12,” Hagman said, noting it will be open enrollment for all Hart District students. “All of our high schools are fantastic … and they all have really rich and unique experiences. I think that Castaic is also going to provide its own experience, and so students that are interested in what we’re offering are able to apply there.”

In addition to athletics and performing arts departments, Castaic High School is expected to have a strong emphasis on career technical education in partnership with COC.

“COC is majorly on board to be not only a business partner, but just a super support of what we’re going to do at Castaic High School,” Hagman said. “Their minds are open and it’s like a blank slate that we get to kind of create, and they will help supplement the stuff that we need in order to make sure that our students are getting the best education that they can.”

One program in the works for Castaic High School will give students the chance to earn up to one year of general elective credits through COC classes taught at the high school.

Several “academies” are also planned for Castaic High, where students can choose a general focus and then narrow their specialty as they go through the program while building employability skills.

For instance, rather than offering individual video production and digital photo classes, Castaic High School is expected to offer an academy with an “umbrella” such as Arts, Media and Entertainment, Hagman noted.

“Within that, students are going to be able to build employability skills,” she said. “We’re going to go ahead and weave that in as we’re going along, so students are knowing how to interview when they leave, they have their resume built, they have an online portfolio — they’re really jumping in and being 21st century learners.”

Hagman continued, “On top of that, if they can come out with a certification, which is ultimately our end goal, then they’re very much employable by the time they walk out of our campus with a diploma in hand, and so they can take what they have in their certification and marry that with a college education or a technical school education and be quite successful.”
