The Expeditions Pioneer Program is a virtual reality app designed for the classroom. It allows educators to give their students an opportunity to visit multiple locations around the world in the span of one class period.

Lindsay O’Brien with the Google Expeditions team said students can visit a wide variety of locations.

“Anywhere from the Great Wall of China, Mount Fuji, the Galapagos Islands, there is a shark expedition, the Palace of Versaille, and even things like Romeo and Juliet’s Verona to tie it into literature,” O’Brien said.

Google’s cardboard cases allow students to insert a smart-phone, enter the app and peer through lenses to enter the virtual world.

“It’s pretty immersive. You can see around 360 degrees. It’s pretty awesome actually,” said Valencia High School student Zachary Vallesteros. “Right now, I’m on top of a clip on Mount Fuji.”

The visit from Google is part of the Technology Education and Literacy in Schools, known as TEALS, program at Valencia High School which started last year, Valencia High School Principal John Costanzo said.

“(TEALS is) directed at computer programing. I think by 2020, there is a phenomenal amount of jobs that are projected, that aren’t even created yet,” Costanzo said. “It gets the kids into an idea of what they may want to pursue after high school.”

Google pic 3Computer Science teacher Jerry Ostrove said the Expeditions program is something that can be of great assistance to not only students, but instructors as well.

“I think it’s a great thing,” Ostrove said. “Students are able to virtually go to places that they couldn’t physically go to, and the teacher can use that visual to reinforce what they’re doing in the classroom.”
