Slated to open to its first class of freshmen in August 2019, Castaic High School is set to include a state-of-the-art CTE program in response to the rising need for what Jensen described as “non-college curriculum” within in the district in the last decade.

“What we want to do is cater to the community, and the needs and changes in the community,” Jensen said. “I would like all of our students to find what their niche is, to find where their talents lie. It could be in a number of areas, and some of it may not be areas where you would go to college.”

Both for the future Castaic High School and among the Hart District’s existing 28 career pathways, CTE program officials are partnering with College of the Canyons and businesses in the Santa Clarita community to create unique opportunities for students.

“To have that many career pathways, you need partners,” Jensen said. “And it’s good for them too. There’s a big-time labor shortage, so if we can have kids come out with skills, with passion, with interest, with eagerness for certain jobs that they like and they enjoy doing, it’s going to fuel our economy. More jobs will stay local, students can have families here… They can lead productive, happy, healthy lives here in Santa Clarita.”

The existing number of career pathways is expected to continue to shift over time depending on the needs of the community as Castaic High School prepares to open its doors and the Hart District continues to serve its existing students.

“As we look at the economy, look at what’s going on in the community, we might say two or three aren’t needed anymore, but four or five more are needed, and maybe we ramp it up,” Jensen said.

He continued, “If we can get students on the right pathway for their personality to be successful in life, to be happy, to make a contribution to society, to give back — that’s what it’s all about, from my perspective.”
