“The design is state of the art, as far as the building and the structure are concerned,” said Steve Sturgeon of the William S. Hart Union High School District. “It is magnificent in terms of what the appeal is going to be when you come up to it.”

Castaic High School sits on 58 acres on a hill in Stone Canyon, as part of a 198-acre site, with “a great deal” of glass at the school’s entrance, according to Sturgeon.

Administration offices, science classrooms, the library and the performing arts center are being constructed at the front of the school in what Sturgeon described as a “quarter moon” shape.

“It has a beautiful entrance and front elevation,” he said. “Then behind those buildings, there is going to be a large gathering area where the outdoor amphitheater and the like (are), and then the buildings behind that for all the various classrooms, and then the fields behind that up against the hillsides.”

Several of Castaic High School’s buildings will have two stories, which are also not commonly seen on other local school campuses, according to Sturgeon.

The project has been in the works by Hart School District officials for more than 20 years, and went through 15 different potential sites, environmental impact reports, selection processes and evaluations before the current site was chosen.

Castaic High School is expected to have an added emphasis on career tech education (CTE) for its students in partnership with College of the Canyons and local businesses, and is slated to open to its first class of freshmen in August 2019.
