Eighth-grade students, teachers and staff at Placerita Junior High School enjoyed a hands-on history lesson Friday.

The annual event filled the school with demonstrations throughout the campus, as the entire eighth grade and all departments took part.

School officials arranged for traveling artifacts, such as a replica cannon on the main field, and heard from uniformed re-enactors on the front lawn, officials said.

Classroom lessons included the influenced the war had on areas such as culture and science.

The history of medicine was discussed in some of the science classes, while dance instructors taught about “the Virginia Wheel,” while “hard tack” — an inexpensive and long-lasting ration used during the war — was prepped for “the troops” in the food room.
