Figures in purple and gold dashed across the field to play one last time with the Symphonic Band and sing once more with the Valencia Senior Choir.

Class of 2018 president Jessica Throckmorton led a moment of silence to mourn for students across the country who died before their graduation.

Valedictorian Chan Gi Kim and Throckmorton smiled as they passed on the Viking Torch of Learning to 2019’s first scholar Joshua Hyun Lee and 2019’s class president Jennifer Elliott.

In her speech, graduate Janelle Eley spoke of the losses students had to recover from in High School and the losses they’d have to continue bouncing back from afterwards.

“Last night I took an L, but tonight I bounce back,” she said, referencing Big Sean’s song “Bounce Back.”

It was a farewell to the campus for Principal John Costanzo as well, who is retiring after 40 years of working in the education system.

For many of the graduates, Costanzo had been with them since Rio Norte, as both he and they moved on from the Junior High to Valencia High School together in 2014.

Several students went up to embrace Constanzo after they received the booklets for their diplomas.

Once every graduate had their name read, the senior choir stood on their stands one last time to sing the “Fight Song.” After a few voices followed along, the crowd roared as the class of 2018 threw their caps in the air.
