“The whole week is themed around snow,” said co-owner Cindy Lewis. “All of their activities, their snacks, their art projects are all having to do with snow and snow themes.”Creative Years Infant Center & Preschool are in the midst of their annual, week-long summer camp with the theme “Winter in July”, complete with snow, school officials said Wednesday.

The kids at the summer camp have graduated from preschool and are going into kindergarten, Lewis said.

The camp is for both the full and part time enrolled students, according to Lewis, who has been an owner of Creative Years Infant Center and Preschool since 2002 and has carried on the summer camp tradition, choosing a unique theme for the week each year.

“Unfortunately, in California, not every child gets to be around snow because we don’t always have snow here in Santa Clarita, but now they can go out and play in their shorts and t-shirts,” Lewis said. “They love it.”

Creative Years had a gazebo set up to block the sun from melting the snow and a small mound with a sled for the children to slide down. The children built a small snowman, dug in the snow and threw snowballs.Creative Years Infant Center & Preschool are in the midst of their annual, week-long summer camp with the theme “Winter in July”, complete with snow, school officials said Wednesday.

“They were amazed,” said Lewis. “All this white stuff coming out from the truck and watching the big chunks of ice getting ground up and blown and then when they first get to it, they’re kind of shocked because it’s wet and cold.”

Some of the children who had never experienced snow before were a little hesitant at first, according to Lewis. However, the young ones who had touched snow before were eager to begin playing in the miniature winter wonderland.

Creative Years Preschool hired Newhall Ice Company to deliver and blow the snow, according to Lewis. The snow is projected to last all day Wednesday and probably into Thursday.

“They’re having a great time,” said Madeline Ervin, a teacher at Creative Years Infant Center & Preschool. “This is a treat.”

  1. Ice is water. No matter how much fun it is for the kids, how can this waste be allowed in our severe drought?

    • I swear there always has to be that one person to write a negative comment on something that is supposed to be joyful or fun. No matter what, somebody is offended or gets their feelings hurt! How can this fun be “allowed” ??! Creative Years is a VERY environmentally cautious preschool and I’m sure very aware of the drought. I’m sure whatever is left over will be used to water plants or grass.
