Nearly $50,000 was raised Saturday night at the Elks Lodge on

Sierra Highway

when KHTS’ own Carl Goldman volunteered to be “roasted” by community leaders.

“In this economy and the fact that we reduced the price of tables, everyone was thrilled that we’d raised that much,” Goldman said. The proceeds go directly to the Samuel Dixon Family Health Centers, which operates three clinics in the Santa Clarita Valley.

The event, which is an annual event with rotating “victims,” attracted just short of 200 people. Goldman commented that the turnout was a good cross-section of the community.

“We did have to invoke the Brown Act a couple of times,” he joked. “We had three of the COC trustees and three of the Hart District board there.”

Wm. S. Hart District Board Chairman Steve Sturgeon was one of the roasters with a quick wit and sense of humor.

Former Santa Clarita Mayor Bob Kellar helped boost the earnings of the evening by donating his

home for a barbecue.
”He offered to host a barbecue every Saturday night from now until the next election,” Goldman said. “That really put us over the top.”

The actual auction item was the use of Kellar’s comfortable ranch-like setting for a barbecue and gathering of the buyer’s friends, with members of the Elks Club doing the cooking. The item went for $2,200 – three times. Goldman said that the donation got sweeter when an anonymous donor volunteered to provide the meat for the barbecues, saving the Elks the expense.

Dentist Neil Green also came forward during the event, offering his services to patients at the low-income clinic.

“With every event, it’s challenging to maintain what’s been achieved in the past,” Goldman concluded. “We’re very happy with the outcome of this year’s roast.”
