Elsmere Canyon Officially Dedicated As Open Space

Congressman Buck McKeon celebrates the close out of 20 year old issue.

This morning, 400 acres of land in Elsmere Canyon was officially passed over to the Mountains and Recreation Conservation Authority. Now it will be preserved as open space. The site was originally owned by a company called BPI, however Allied Waste took over the ownership of the land, and today, made the official grant.

Twenty years ago, this portion of Elsmere Canyon, located near San Fernando Road and Highway 14, was on course to become a massive landfill. The issue was red hot for years, seeing work from Buck McKeon at both the City Council level and Congressional level. The years of public and political opposition from Santa Clarita and beyond eventually ended in an agreement to donate the land for open space.

Congressman McKeon issued a statement in response to the dedication saying; “Having the Elsmere Canyon acreage formally dedicated as open space today is a dream come true. Today, we finally see closure to an issue that many of the community’s leaders have been working on over the past 20 years.”

McKeon also praised Mike Antonovich for his work in the matter. “Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonvich has done a wonderful job of successfully negotiating today’s dedication of the Elsmere Canyon property,” McKeon continued.  “Now, we can be assured that this pristine area of land will be preserved for future generations to enjoy.”
