The Academy of the Canyons, in association with Project Linus, will be hosting “Make a Blanket Day” Oct. 7 in a community effort to knit blankets to distribute to families who currently live in shelters.

“Make a Blanket Day” is a community effort that will be held at Golden Valley High School gym from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. Participants are not expected to have any prior experience, according to a news release.

Interested participants can sign up here.

Volunteers will be provided with food trucks, music and help from experienced blanketeers.

Project Linus has chapters in all 50 states, including the Santa Clarita Valley, Antelope Valley, Sylmar, & Los Angeles County chapters.  

Project Linus is a nonprofit organization that collect blankets and distributes them to children and families in hospitals, shelters, social service agencies, or anywhere that a child might need them.

The collective community effort from “Make a Blanket Day” will typically make around 600 to 700 blankets.

The Santa Clarita Valley has Project Linus clubs at:

Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult and bring a waiver in order to participate.

The Santa Clarita Valley / Antelope Valley / Sylmar chapter of Project Linus’ started in February 2013.

The organization holds “Make A Blanket Day Workshops” throughout the year which helps students learn to sew.
