SCV Fishing Report January 31st: Local Lakes And Saltwater Report

Here’s this weeks fishing report for KHTS-1220AM, as reported by Halibut Hal:

Freshwater Report:
1)  Castaic Lake….The upper lake will have a trout plant sometime this week.  A 13 pound largemouth bass was caught here from the Dam, the day of the last trout plant!  The catfish are biting very good by the Buoy line.  Slow fishing for striped bass.
2)  Pyramid Lake….Quite a few “pansized trout” are being caught in the Marina area.  There continues to be a fair striped bass bite also in the Marina area and the Inlet; most of them in the 1-5 pound range.  Catfish, bass and bluegill remain slow.

3)  Lake Piru….Most species remain slow here.  There is a fair bass bite happening in the deeper water.
4)  Lake Cachuma….Very good smallmouth and largemouth bass fishin.  The bass are moving into the shallows.  For trout, try trolling from the surface to the15 foot depth near Santa Cruz Bay.  Try the Narrows for an improved crappie bite.

Saltwater Report:
Landings from Long Beach to MarinaDelRey:
The dominant species right now are perch, sand bass, calico bass, sculpin, sanddabs and if you get lucky…a legal halibut.  On Monday, the “Tradition” from Redondo Sportfishing nabbed 17 calico bass along with 19 sand bass for 9 anglers.  There’s still live squid out there along with anchovies and sardines for bait.

Oxnard/Ventura Landings:
It’s “dabs and crabs” at Channel Islands Sportfishing in Oxnard.  Hundreds of sanddabs are being caught during the day and lots of rock crabs along with a few spider crabs on the “Cobra” twilight trips.  Very few anglers right now.  Things will change come March 1st…..when rockfish and lingcod can be kept again; that’s what they’re waiting for!

……until next week, this is Halibut Hal signing off for your Hometown Station, KHTS-1220AM.
