SCV Fishing Report January 4th: Local Lakes And Saltwater Report

Happy New Year from Halibut Hal and KHTS-1220AM…..Here’s this weeks fishing report:

Freshwater Report:
1)  Castaic Lake….A couple of recent trout plants have kept the trout fishin good.  A few striped bass in the 3-5 pound range are also biting.  The best areas are the West Ramp, Main Ramp, Kong Island and the buoy line.  Slow fishing for all other species.
2)    Pyramid Lake….Small trout continue to bite after recent trout plants.  Try the Marina for both trout and 3-5 pound striped bass.  A few catfish are biting on cut baits.  Fair fishing for bass and bluegill.

3)  Lake Piru….Very few anglers and slow fishing continues.  The bass are in deeper water and don’t want to bite.
4)  Lake Cachuma….Good bite on trout due to a recent 4,000 pound trout plant.  Try Mohawk, Drake’s Cove, Harvey’s, and E Point.  Slow fishing on all other species.

Saltwater Report:
Landings from Long Beach to MarinaDelRey:
Lots of assorted rockfish, sculpin, ocean whitefish and sheephead were caught this past week.  Rockfish and lingcod are now closed to sportfishing for a couple of months.  Sculpin, calico bass and sand bass and sand dabs are going to be the mainstays for the next  few months.

Oxnard/Ventura Landings:
Half to full limits of red snapper, salmon grouper, chuckleheads and other assorted rockfish.  A few lings and quite a few sculpin also are biting.  The boats were crowded prior to the end of year rockfish/lingcod closure.
I fished on the “Coroloma” on Friday, 12/30, out of Hooks Landing in Oxnard.  Joining me was my grandson, Matt, and my friend Tony, along with 39 other anglers.  We fished the east end of Anacapa Island in 150 to 300 feet of water in very foggy conditions. Matt caught two lingcod, 2 salmon grouper and 4 other rockfish. Tony was the “sculpin king” with 5 sculpin plus 2 salmon grouper.  I caught 1 lingcod, 2 salmon grouper, 2 sculpin and 3 red snapper.

The Coroloma is a 70 foot vessel with a big galley and excellent crew.  I highly recommend the boat especially with 20 anglers or so (there were plenty of tangles, due to the crowded conditions). Hooks Landing: ph: (805)382-6233.

……..well, that’s it for this weeks fishing report.  Halibut Hal reporting for your Hometown Station, KHTS 1220-AM.
