SCV Fishing Report May 1st: Local Lakes And Saltwater Report

Halibut Hal here, reporting with this week’s KHTS fishing report:

Freshwater Report:
1)  Castaic Lake….Saturday, May 5th is “Fishin’ & Fun for Kids Day” at Castaic Lake.  The event is from 8AM to noon;  it should be lots of fun….there will be raffles, prizes, and a free hot dog lunch.  Rods and reels and bait are provided. This past week produced an improved panfish bite in both the Lagoon and big lake.  The bass spawn has slowed.

2)  Pyramid Lake….Lots of black bass are in the shallow water in spawning mode; there is also some smallmouth and largemouth bass in the mix.  Try trolling the deep water over baitfish for stripers in the 2 – 4 pound size.  Decent catfish bite in the Coves.  The Dam is the best area to try for some trout.

3)  Lake Piru….Still a darn good crappie bite going on here; try Reasoner Cove for fish in the 1 – 2 pound size.  There’s also some redear and bluegill biting along with spawning bass up to 4 pounds in the shallow water.

4)  Lake Cachuma….Good fishin for tout; try the Mohawk area or Harveys.  Catfish and crappie are biting in Johnsons Bay and in the Narrows.  Spawning largemouth bass continue to bite in the shallows.

Saltwater Report:
Landings from Long Beach to Marina Del Rey:
Here’s what good weather and conditions bring forth:  The “First String” from L A Harbor in San Pedro returned from a 2 day trip with a huge haul: 43 anglers caught 320 sheephead, along with 320 ocean whitefish, plus 688 assorted rockfish.  Lots of fillets/ fish tacos!  Meanwhile, the “Enterprise” from Long Beach Marina Sportfishing had a decent haul for its 58 anglers.  The haul included 249 rockfish, 61 bocaccio, 19 red snapper and 141 sculpin.  Meanwhile, at Redondo, the “Tradition” with light loads is getting full limits of both rockfish and sculpin for its passengers.

Oxnard/Ventura Landings:
At CISCOS Landing in Oxnard, the “Mirage” checked in on 4/30 with limits of lingcod along with limits of rockfish plus 54 ocean whitefish!  While the “Aloha Spirit” brought back 194 rockfish, 14 lingcod, and 15 ocean whitefish for its 24 anglers.  The 3/4 day boat “Genleman” with 13 anglers nabbed limits of rockfish plus two lingcod.

This Friday,  I will be on a charter fishing trip on the “Stardust” from Santa Barbara.  I’ll report on it next week……
……until then, this is Halibut Hal reporting for KHTS-1220AM, your Hometown Station.
