Starting off with our local lakes, here’s what’s happening:
1) Castaic Lake….The stripers are chasing the shad to the surface….Just look for boiling fish. The stripped bass are averaging 2 – 4 pounds. The bass fishing has slowed. Fair to good bite on bluegill.
2) Pyramid Lake….The stripers are still biting on the surface. These are mostly 1 – 3 pound fish. There’s a good catfish and bluegill bite in most coves. Try fishing in 12 to 30 feet of water for the largemouth bass.
3) Lake Piru….Fair to good action on bass, crappie and bluegill in most of the coves. Fair catfish bite.
4) Lake Cachuma….Lots of bait all over the lake! Many catfish limits are happening in the shallow coves and creek channels. Improved fishing for crappie and bluegill. Hit and miss on the bass fishing.
Landings from Long Beach to Marina Del Rey: Rockfish is the name of the game. In addition, sculpin, ocean whitefish, sheephead, and a few bass are in the mix. The humboldt squid bite has pretty much disappeared.
Oxnard/Ventura Landings: It’s a rockfish fest here too…Quite a few red snapper are biting along with the usual assortment of ocean whitefish, sand and calico bass, sheephead and sculpin. If you want to try something different….try catching some crabs on a PM trip on the “Cobra” out of Cisco Sportfishing in Oxnard.
On Sunday, The “Island Spirit” out of Ventura Sportfishing had a great trip with 18 anglers; they caught 22 lingcod along with a bunch of rockfish, sculpin and ocean whitefish.
…….well, until next week, this is Halibut Hal signing out for 1220AM-KHTS, your Hometown Station.
