SCV Outdoor Report: Hitting The Trail With Fido

Written by MRCA Naturalist Mieko Alley

Hiking with a partner is more than just good company, it is a time-old understanding between hiking buddies: I will look out for you, you look out for me. This summer, MRCA Rangers have had to make a few unique rescues in Caballero Canyon and Towsley Canyon. Both rescues were a result of a hiking partner not being in touch with the needs of their buddy.

Unlike a scene from Lassie, an honorable Collie did not run to find a Ranger to help their distressed owner…it has actually been the other way around. During these hot summer months, it is not uncommon for more dog related rescues to be called in. In one instance, it took a team of hikers, bikers, and a Ranger to carry a 150 pound Saint Bernard 1.25 miles to the front of the park to receive medical attention. A hiking buddy is your trusted companion, and you need to watch out as much for them as they are for you. So in honor of National Dog Day on August 26th, here are some useful hiking tips when adventuring with your pooch.

The first step to prepare for hiking with your dog is the same one you should be doing for yourself – know before you go! Read up on the trail to know about regulations and potential hazards, like ticks and poison oak. Many local parks allow dogs on a six foot or less leash, but not every park follows this guideline. Educate yourself before heading out.

We’ve trained Walden to stop and sit as other trail users pass us.

Also know how to care for yourself and your pet if there is an incident on the trail. Carry a fully charged cell phone and a basic first aid kit with disinfectant, gauze, bandaging material, and anything else that seems reasonable. Pick a time of day to avoid peak sun exposure and beat the heat. Be sure to bring plenty of water for you and your four legged companion. It seems like a no brainer, but it is imperative you hydrate yourself and your dog while recreating.

Walden can finish a whole bottle of water on a 2-mile trail.

Nobody enjoys carrying around a bag of dog poop, especially for several miles. This may mean buying heavier duty bags or dedicating a sealable container for dog waste. Remember you and your hiking partner are guests in nature. Domesticated dog scat is much different than their wild cousins. The main difference: coyote scat plays a vital role in the natural environment (would you believe coyotes assist in the germination and dispersal of seeds via their droppings), while domesticated dog feces have an opposite effect on the land. Please be prepared, and remember to clean up after your dog.

Lastly, once you have concluded your hike, be sure to check your dog’s coat and paws for ticks and burrs. That’s what good hiking partners do!

While a hike is a feast of sights for you, it is a feast of smells for your dog. No matter what sense is being used, returning to nature can heighten the senses for both person and pooch. Be a good hiking partner and keep an eye out for your buddy whether they have two or four legs. Happy Trails!
