It’s election day, so, go vote and then take a break and read Halibut Hal’s fish report for KHTS AM-1220:
1) Castaic Lake…Terrific catfishing here this past week! The best baits for the cats are sardines and mackerel and the best areas are Necktie Canyon and Elizabeth Canyon. Very slow striper fishing. Some bass available near the Buoy Line and Kong Island, the best bite time is early morning.
2) Pyramid Lake…Good to fair action for black bass with some smallmouth and largemouth in the mix. Still some catfish bites in the Coves on cut mackerel. Striper fishing has slowed quite a bit this week.
3) Lake Piru…If you can find structure, drop-offs, ledges, or weeds you might find some fish. The drop in water level has really hurt the fishing, as fish here are kind of confused and homeless. The coves are dry.
4) Lake Cachuma…As predicted last week…the trout fishing, after the 4,000 pound trout plant, was off the hook! There were many limits and near limits of trout taken (mostly from shore). Slow for everything else.
Landings from Long Beach to Marina Del Rey:
With bait tanks full of live squid, the fishing remains very good for everything (except the exotics). The “Victory” from Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach brought back 21 sheephead, 25 ocean whitefish, 63 rockfish and 5 sculpin on Monday’s 3/4 day trip with only 9 anglers. Meanwhile at Marina Del Rey, the “New Del Mar” on it’s morning 1/2 day run with 26 anglers caught 12 lingcod, 212 rockfish and 3 sheephead. It’s fish taco time! No reports of yellowtail or white seabass from any of the boats this past week.
On Monday, the “Aloha Spirit” from CISCO Landing had it’s first “Lingcod Special” and it was very special indeed, for the happy 17 anglers aboard. They nabbed limits of lings (34) plus limits of rockfish, 6 cabezon, 44 ocean whitefish and 8 sheephead while fishing Santa Cruz Island in 130 feet of water, in flat calm seas, and beautiful weather….that is an outstanding catch for a 3/4 day trip! Meanwhile, the “Island Tak” with 11 anglers caught 10 fish limits of calico bass. Well, I better stop and eat lunch, my fish report is making me hungry!
…until next week, this is Halibut Hal signing off for your Hometown Station, KHTS AM-1220
