SCV Fishing Report, October 30th: Local Lakes And Saltwater Report

It’s time for this week’s fresh and salt water fishing report for KHTS AM-1220:

Freshwater Report:

1)  Castaic Lake….A few small stripers are biting, but quite slow this past week. There are some black bass biting in the early AM or late PM; try Utopia Cove, Dry Gulch, or Firebreak Cove.

2)  Pyramid Lake….The water level is up at Pyramid Lake.  Stripers are biting in the early AM off the Points and near the Buoy Line; shad baits are working best.  Fair catfishin’ on cut baits in the Coves.

3)  Lake Piru…Slow fishing prevailed due to the drop in the water level, as the bass look for new locations to live, hide and ambush baits. However some small, largemouth bass are being caught in water from 6 foot to 25 foot depth.

4)  Lake Cachuma…Catfish continue to bite on nightcrawlers and cut mackerel; try Jack Rabbit Flats, Little Cachuma Bay or the Narrows.  Remember, on November 1st (Thursday) 4,000 pounds of trout will be planted in the lake.  I predict very good trout fishing later this week!

Saltwater Report:

Landings from Long Beach to Marina Del Rey:

“Redondo Special”, the AM 1/2 day boat has the best potential for exotics, fishing close by at Rocky Point.  With lots of spawning squid in the Bay and candy bait in the bait tanks, the Redondo Special on Monday brought back 8 white seabass, 6 sheephead, 7 calico bass, 1 lingcod, and 21 rockfish for 14 anglers aboard!  On Monday, “Monte Carlo” on its 1/2 day run from 22nd Street Landing in San Pedro had a notable trip…nabbing 9 lingcod to 20 pounds, 9 cabezon to 14 pounds, 12 sheephead, and lots of rockfish, for the lucky anglers on board.  The east end of Catalina Island is holding lots of small yellowtail.

Oxnard/Ventura Landings:

A couple of white seabass were caught on “Aloha Spirit” this past couple of weeks. The weather put a damper on the fishing with rain and winds, however the seas were flat-calm as the weekend approached and lots of quality red snapper, lingcod, sheephead, big ocean whitefish, calico bass, etc. were caught.  Anacapa Island usually produces some huge “homeguard” yellowtail in November, as the squid spawn shows and Santa Rosa and San Miguel Islands will also be areas to be…. at the right time!

NOTE: Starting November 1st, the DFG has reduced the rockfish maximum depth to 300 feet of water.

…and that concludes this week’s fish report.  This is Halibut Hal reporting for your Hometown Station, KHTS AM-1220.
