California has been experiencing a drought for the past three years and while the rain is much needed, it presents several hazards storm-system-to-bring-rain-to-santa-claritafor residents, especially motorists.

The drought is not expected to produce nearly enough rain to end the drought, according to the National Climatic Data Center website.

A weak storm system moved into Southern California late Saturday and continued into Sunday morning; however, it is expected to produce less than a tenth of an inch, according to the statement from the National Weather Service.

There will likely be a break in rainfall on Monday, but by Monday night, clouds will increase once again and there is a chance of some rain late at night, according to National Weather Service officials.

It appears that rain will become the most widespread and heaviest on Tuesday into Tuesday evening, with a chance of a two to three hour burst of very heavy rainfall, which would bring the threat of flash flooding and mud and debris flows to locations in and around recent burn areas.

National Weather Service officials expect to see 1-2 inches of rain in coastal and valley areas and 2-4 inches in foothill and mountain areas, according to the statement.

The National Climatic Data Center stated that Santa Clarita would need from 12-15 inches of rain to end the drought in a single month on their website.

However, the city will be getting a significant amount of rain and it is important to stay safe, especially while driving.

Previous Story:

“One thing our deputies always hear, especially during wet weather is, ‘people in Southern California don’t know how to drive in the rain,’” according to a Sheriff’s Department press release.

Windshield wipers, headlamps and brakes and tires are some of the most important car parts to check before rain arrives.

If the rubber on windshield wipers is cracked or brittle, they should be replaced immediately.

Motorists are also required to use headlights during daylight hours while running their windshield wipers. Low-beam headlights–never parking lights–should be used in the rain, day and night.

Motorists can help prevent collisions and avoid hydroplaning, by ensuring that their brakes and tires are in good working order before driving in the rain.

During first few days of rain after a long dry period, the roads are most slippery because oil and dust have not washed away, making it easier to lose control of a vehicle.
