State Water Resources Control Board members have created a website that allows California residents to report water waste in an attempt to conserve the State’s dwindling water supply.

The website, SaveWater.CA.gov, allows concerned residents to anonymously report water waste, whether deliberate or accidental, from a phone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer by simply entering the type of water waste and the address of the location. There is also an option to add a photo.
The website will then send the report to the local water agency serving the specified location.
“The whole intent is to have another tool in the toolbox to conserve water,” said Castaic Lake Water Agency General Manager, Dan Masnada. “The focus here in the Santa Clarita Valley is on exterior use. Two-thirds of water use in the Santa Clarita Valley occurs outdoors for landscaping purposes,” Masnada said.
Currently, local water agencies have the authority to impose fines of up to $500 per day on those that ignore water use restrictions.
In April of this year, Governor Jerry Brown proposed to increase the maximum penalty to $10,000 per day on repeated offenders.
“There have been some penalties in the valley, like $50, but that is only if the initial notice is not responded to,” Masnada said.

Isn’t this like Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union where people were encouraged to turn in their neighbors for violation of state policy? Is this the kind of society in which we wish to live? I would urge that no one comply with this.
