Out of the 17 dogs brought to the event, nine were adopted the same day — with all fees paid for by Valencia Nissan — and one dog was adopted at the shelter Monday using an event voucher.

“I was more than delighted with the turnout,” said Bob Bailey, the dealership’s executive manager. “So many of the dogs that are at the shelter, it’s not that they’re bad dogs, that there’s anything wrong with them… They deserve a good home.”

Two of the Pet Adoption Day’s success stories were dogs rescued during a raid on a cockfighting ring in Val Verde last week, according to Don Barre, public information officer for the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control.

“It was a huge success,” Barre said. “This is a great opportunity for Castaic to bring our adoptable dogs into the community and give them every opportunity to be seen and adopted… We’re all very happy.”

There is still a chance for the event’s total adoption numbers to go up, as 25 vouchers covering the cost of dog adoptions were issued by Valencia Nissan, which are good until June 3.

Although there were no cats showcased at the event, all cats are free to adopt through the Castaic Animal Shelter — and all Los Angeles County shelters — thanks to a grant by the ASPCA.

Another Pet Adoption Day is already in the works, and is slated for August 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Valencia Nissan dealership on Creekside Road.

“We’re planning to do it quarterly,” Barre said. “We’re very excited for this partnership (with Valencia Nissan) and the success of the event, and looking forward to the next one.”

“I was really delighted with the community response,” Bailey added, “and I hope the next one is even bigger and better.”
