“A lot of ham, a lot of mayo” was the tongue-in-cheek description of the group’s comedic styling, one of the co-founders, Randy Aronson, joked.

“We’re trying to a lot of over-the-top type comedy,” he explained, a la some of the group’s favorite influences, such as Monty Python and Carol Burnett, as well as Kentucky Fried Theater and The Birdcage. “Just that kind of troupe mentality of comedy, when you’re writing for a specific group of people with a specific type of talent.”

Big Sandwich Theatre Company consists of five friends who’ve acted together on various Santa Clarita Valley stages: Randy Aronson, Sanya Arnold, Wade Bradford, Christopher Flowers and Tyler Joy, with Bradford and Flowers authoring “Change the Station.”

The premise of their first show has roots in reality and the history of show business, said Aronson.

“Change the Station” involves a 1930s radio station around the time when stations were transitioning from 300 watt to 600 watt broadcasts, he said.

The struggling, local Portland, Ore.-based station is putting on a dramatic show, in an effort to convince NBC to buy them out.

While the actors have worked together on various local stages, and now feel as though the timing is perfect to bring this new original type of show to the SCV.

“We feel like we’ve finally found the right group of people to put (the show) together,” Aronson said.

“It really is an attempt to bring some kind of different theater to this area,” Aronson said, “an original type, and I think that the area can support this now.”

Their approach, which the group has been honing since February of last year in local spaces, stages and studios throughout the Santa Clarita Valley, like The Green Room, is a blend of what they enjoy, which comes across in the performance, he explained.

“Very much in the way of Monty Python, we did what we thought would make us laugh,” Aronson said, “and we thought if it made us laugh, there’s a very good chance it could make you laugh.”

The tickets for the first show, which premieres this weekend, are available on Brown Paper Tickets, and information is available on the troupe’s Facebook page.
