The Theatre Project/SCV is staging a star-studded tribute to the musical work of STEPHEN SCHWARTZ at 7:30 pm on Sunday evening, October 22.  While the name may not ring a bell with many locals, the names of his works most certainly will.

Schwartz scored a little show called WICKED, for starters, as well as GODSPELL and PIPPIN, among numerous other Broadway musicals.  And let’s not forget his song scores for such animated films at THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, POCAHONTAS, and THE PRINCE OF EGYPT.

Arguably the biggest Broadway evening in Santa Clarita Valley history, this tribute will be the first public event for the group that recently announced its plans to bring professional theatre to the Santa Clarita Valley.  Not only will various luminaries be on hand to sing some of the well-known tunes from Schwartz’ prolific mind, but the composer himself has agreed to appear as a performer.

During the course of telling friends and associates about The Theatre Project/SCV, one of the company’s early supporters, Annie Schwartz, spoke to her business partner, Marc Chancer; he became so enthralled with the company’s vision that he contacted his friend, Stephen Schwartz.  That phone call ignited the entire tribute project, for which Chancer is serving as a co-producer.  This one evening could raise all the funds necessary for The Theatre Project/SCV to mount its entire first three-show season.

“We were overwhelmed by the outpouring of enthusiasm and support from so many influential members of our community,” Slominski said.  “And,” added partner Salyer, “we’re honored and humbled that not only has Mr. Schwartz given his permission for us to stage this event, but that he has agreed to attend, even taking the stage to personally interpret one of his best known songs.”
