The City of Santa Clarita is proud to announce that Central Park now features a brand new recreational Disc Golf Course and invites everyone to attend the grand opening event Saturday August 27, 2005 at 9:30 am.
Present at the event will be Mayor Cameron Smyth, who will throw out the first disc, and members of the City Council. Also speaking at the opening will be fifteen-year-old Michael Morrisette.
Morrisette approached the City earlier this year, hoping to complete his Eagle Scout project. He took the City’s disc golf course idea and made it his own. With the cooperation of Morrisette, local Boy Scout Troop 58, and the City’s Parks, Recreation, & Community Services Department, the nine-hole recreational course was completed in under a year. So far Morrisette has managed to raise over a third of the money for the $3000 project.
Disc golf is similar to miniature golf, where players compete to toss their discs into a series of target “holes.” An excellent outdoor activity for local youth, the City’s new recreational course features a natural woodchip playing surface and nine target “holes.”
Central Park is located at 27150 Bouquet Canyon Road. Families are encouraged to attend the grand opening, and the first 100 people to show up will receive a free disc, courtesy of the City. No RSVP is necessary. Water and light refreshments will be provided.
“We are very excited to be opening this new park feature,” said Mayor Cameron Smyth. “The new disc golf course is a great low-impact sport and kids and adults of all ages can enjoy playing. The addition of this new course provides our community with yet another great, safe, healthy activity at one of our City’s beautiful parks.”
