For the first time ever, the Southern California Swimming Junior Olympics will be held in the City of Santa Clarita. Hosted by Canyons Aquatic Swim Club and supported by the City, this prestigious event will be held from August 2 to August 6 at the City’s state-of-the-art Aquatics Center, located at 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway in Santa Clarita.
The Junior Olympics will showcase some of the best swimming talent throughout California and the United States, bringing together more than 70 swim clubs in pursuit of the coveted Southern California Junior Olympic Championship title. More than 1,000 competitors will vie for a Junior Olympic gold medal in events ranging from 50 meter sprints to 1,500 meter long-distance races.
“We are thrilled to be the host City for the Southern California Swimming Junior Olympics,” said Santa Clarita Mayor, Laurene Weste. “The event celebrates the talent and commitment of Southern California’s young athletes and we’re proud that our Aquatics team and beautiful new facility will be a part of this exciting event.”
The City of Santa Clarita’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department and Tourism Office have been working with Canyons Aquatic Club staff since fall 2005 to help plan for the event. The meet promises to be one of the largest swim events Santa Clarita has seen to date, attracting visitors from the San Fernando, Orange and San Diego counties.
The Santa Clarita Aquatic Center (SCAC) is a three-acre, multi-pool aquatic facility and offers aquatic opportunities for every level of swimmer, as well as swim lessons, Jr. Lifeguard training, and recreational swimming and activities. The Santa Clarita Aquatics Center currently hosts several local and Master’s swim meets and is utilized as a training facility for local Olympic hopefuls.
Canyons Aquatic Club has emerged as one of the top aquatic programs in the United States, which is evident by unparalleled achievements including national age group records, national championships, and Olympic gold medals.
