The bands that performed were: At Our Expense, Bedlam for Barbie, The Butterfly Gang, Dos Trios, Scissorhand Syndrome, and The Venns.
The bands competed for first place, second place and crowd favorite.
At least one member of each band that participated had an active COC student according to Ryan Theule, Vice President of the CCC.
“The event serves for two purposes. One, to get the community out for a fun day but also talk about our CCC,” said Theule.
The CCC is celebrating its eighth anniversary in the fall, according to Theule.
“We put the event on to make sure the campus is serving the community as a place where folks want to come, enjoy a day out in the sun and learn about what COC is doing at the east-side campus,” said Theule. “There are still people in the community that don’t know the campus is here or haven’t been on campus so an event like today is a chance for them to get on site, see what’s here and realize there’s a lot of stuff available.”
The CCC has about 90 classes and about 10,000 seats during the summer semester, according to Theule.
In addition to the bands, there was also a classic car show, raffles and gourmet food trucks available.
The prizes for first place included a $500 check from the COC ASG, a $500 gift card from D’addario, a $300 gift card from Keyboard Galleria Music Center, a $150 gift card from Mogami, an acoustic guitar from Washburn and a musician’s “goodie bag” of accessories.
In addition to the prizes, KHTS AM-1220 will be playing the winning band’s music and an interview/feature on the band will be aired on SCVTV Channel 20.
The prizes for second place included a $300 gift card from D’addario, a $200 gift card from Keyboard Galleria Music Center, a $100 gift card from Mogami and a musician’s “goodie bag” of accessories.
The crowd favorite’s prizes included a $200 gift card from D’addario and a $100 gift card from Keyboard Galleria Music Center.
There were two judges at the event, Andrea Standley and David May.
Standley is a 27-year Warner Brothers Records veteran with an extensive background in A&R, production, and video.
After retiring from WB, Standley began work on the songwriter collaboration site, Songsinc. Since its 2006 launch, Sonsinc’s platform artists have written over 1,700 new songs.
A songwriter advocate, Standley also partnered with songwriter Kenny Lamb in 2013 to create the advocacy site, SongDriven Media.
May has worked in the music industry for over 30 years as a producer, songwriter, professional musician, and a company executive for Warner Brothers Records and Rhino Entertainment.
May received three Grammy nominations, and two wins. May is not ready to retire after working with artists like Eric Clapton, Linkin Park, The Eagles, Green Day, and Michael Buble.
The event was sponsored by Remo, KHTS, Ernie Ball, COC ASG, Pro-Mark KGMC Keyboard Galleria Music Center, Dunlop, Mogami, Korg, Clear Voice, SIT Strings, Ashdown Engineering, Zildjian, D’Addario and Washburn Guitars.
