Dodger Caravan Comes To Santa Clarita

Players, Coaches, Legends & Broadcasters Travel to Communities from Torrance to Santa Clarita;  Milton Bradley, Jeff Weaver, Kazuhisa Ishii, Steve Garvey, Don Newcombe on Board

LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles Dodgers players, legends, coaches and broadcasters continue their travels through the greater community as the Dodger Caravan completes its 2005 tour on Monday, Feb. 7 and Tuesday, Feb. 8 with trips to the beach cities and the San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys.

Milton Bradley, Jeff Weaver and Kazuhisa Ishii are expected to be amongst the players traversing the Southland, along with coach Glenn Hoffman and minor league prospects Chuck Tiffany and Delwyn Young.  Also anticipated to join the tour will be Dodger legends Steve Garvey, Don Newcombe and Al Downing, who joins the Dodger broadcast booth in 2005 as a baseball analyst.  Hall of Fame broadcaster Jaime Jarrin and Pepe Yñiguez, the
Spanish-language voices of the Dodgers on flagship KWKW, will also join the festivities.  New Dodger play-by-play man Charley Steiner will act as master of ceremonies for the Caravans.

As part of the Dodgers’ Community Outreach program, the 2005 Dodger Caravan perpetuates the team’s long-standing mission within the community. At each stop along the tour, the Caravan provides fans with an up-close-and-personal opportunity to meet and hear from the Caravan members, participate in question-and-answer sessions, see demonstrations
of professional baseball skills, procure autographs, win fabulous prizes and, most importantly, take an off-season step toward getting ready for the Dodgers’ defense of their 2004 National League West Division championship.

“The Dodgers are intimately woven into the fabric of the Southern California community,” said Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt Jr. “These Caravans give us the opportunity to give back to our fans, to actually visit their communities, and show our appreciation for their loyal support.”

On Monday, Feb. 7, the Caravan will make its first stop at Manchester Elementary School, followed by Torrance Cultural Arts Center, Fern Elementary School and the Venice Boys & Girls Club.  The Caravan will end the day for a celebratory evening at Busby’s in Santa Monica.  Anticipated to participate on the Caravan’s “west leg” is pitcher Kazuhisa Ishii,
former Cy Young and MVP Don Newcombe, coach Glenn Hoffman, Hall of Fame broadcaster Jaime Jarrin and minor leaguer stars Chuck Tiffany and Delwyn Young.  Dodger broadcaster Charley Steiner will emcee the events.

The Caravan heads north from Dodger Stadium on Tuesday, Feb. 8, starting at Broadous Elementary School in Pacoima and then heading to California State University, Northridge for a noontime gathering.

The Feb. 8 Caravan will then visit Hart PONY League in Santa Clarita, where Play Ball LA, a Dodgers Dream Foundation initiative, will present a donation of $1,000 and provide an hour-long clinic.  The Caravan closes out the 2005 festivities at Universal CityWalk, with activities slated to start at 5 p.m. and player arrivals at 6 p.m.  Expected to make ppearances on Feb. 8 are players Milton Bradley, Jeff Weaver and Kazuhisa Ishii, as well as coach Lenn Hoffman.  Dodger legends Steve Garvey and Al Downing are anticipated to join the tour, along with minor leaguers Chuck Tiffany and Delwyn Young and Spanish-language roadcaster Pepe Yñiguez.

Charley Steiner will emcee the events.

Caravan stops will include appearances by the Dodgers’ Street Team and/or
Dodger Blue on Wheels.

Elementary school and Boys & Girls Club visits are not open to the public (media is welcome), and autographs at each stop will be limited to the first 100 fans, and wrist bands will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

Players, coaches, legends and broadcasters listed are expected to attend. However, unforeseen circumstances can cause last-minute changes to the Caravan roster.

Sponsors of the Dodger Caravan include Kraft Foods, Inc., The Coca-Cola Company, Universal CityWalk Hollywood, Busby’s (Santa Monica), The Greens (Valencia), Panda Restaurant Group and Altadena Certified Dairy.
