Santa Clarita Valley teens and their parents had the opportunity to learn about important information regarding teenage domestic violence and relationships Thursday at City Hall.

Hart District To Host Teen Dating Violence Awareness Event

Santa Clarita Valley nonprofit organizations, education and law enforcement leaders are planning to present a “Teen Dating Violence: What YOU Need to Know” event.

The event is expected to be held Thursday, May 7 at 6 p.m. at Arroyo Seco Junior High School.

“It’s an important for teens and their parents to attend teen dating violence is a problem in our communities,” said Karissa Valencia, program director of the Domestic Violence Center of the Santa Clarita Valley. “About 1.5 million high schools students suffer from physical abuse from a dating partner nationwide.”

William S. Hart Union School Hart District, Domestic Violence Center of the Santa Clarita Valley, CSUN Community Agency Strength United and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials will be at the event.

“The event is designed for Hart District parents or guardians and their students, but anyone in the community may attend,” said Lesley Day, PASE coordinator.  “Many of the school sites have also offered these PASE nights as an alternative to Saturday School.  We have received positive feedback from those who have attended and we plan to create more Parent and Student Empowerment Nights next year.”

One in four teens will experience some form of dating violence, according to the news release. This event will keep parents, students and community members informed about different issues our students face on a daily basis.

“Teen dating violence is something that we need to tackle head on. We will educate parents on signs to look for, let teens know that they are not alone and there are resources there for them if they are dealing with this or if their friends are,” Valencia said. “We will talk about teen dating violence and sexual assault, what they are, how to talk to kids if parents see minor signs of abuse, how to talk to them about abuse and show teens what a healthy relationships looks like.”
