Homeful for the Holidays is an event being held The Paseo Club in Valencia on Nov. 30 at 3:30 -6 p.m. where tennis players of all ages sign up to play in a “Round Robin” and can watch professionals play against each other.

Elizabeth Rydall got the idea when her daughter was working on a school project for SCVi, a charter school in Castaic, she said. Rydall’s daughter made a film about homelessness after they volunteered at a Santa Clarita Valley shelter.

“The problem of homelessness is pretty invisible. We wondering about where are the homeless people,” Rydall said. “She inspired me because her inquiry of questions of what a difference one person can make. It is something she may do for one year but I would like to have a lifetime of helping because the issue is so much more complicated than people just out of jobs.”

Rydall, who has done fundraisers before for Family Promise, hopes to raise $1,000 at the event to donate to Bridge to Home.

“This is dear to my heart. I became friends with a man who does live in wash,” Rydall said.  He is an outstanding human being who lost job and is disabled. He worked in aerospace and until disability comes through, he doesn’t have way out of situation. He could stay at shelter but he has a significant other so he lives in a tent in the wash.”

The Round Robin is a part of the event where tennis athletes of all ages can play against each other, she said. Some of the professionals at the club have donated their time to be auctioned off.

“One of the pros is letting us sell her time and the highest bidder will get to play with her,” Rydall said.

There will also be baskets to bid on such as a wine basket and a foot care basket.

Rydall is also asking if people could bring gently used tennis clothes to donate.

“We’re also going to show show beautiful photography by Gary Choppe about homeless people in the Santa Clarita Valley,” Rydall said. “Anyone is invited people signed up to play in the Round Robin event for a donation of $20.”

The event can host 40 players and anyone can come to watch the matches, shop with vendors.

To sign up, email Elizabeth Rydall at elizabeth.rydall@scvi-k12.org.
