The Los Angeles County Fire Department, along with other safety advocates, will be reminding children and adults this fall about fire safety during Fire Prevention Month. Although the week of October 9 -15 has been proclaimed National Fire Prevention Week 2005, the Fire Department and Board of Supervisors are proclaiming the month of October as Fire Prevention Month.
This year’s theme "Use Candles with Care" emphasizes the importance of never leaving a candle unattended. Candles may be pretty to look at but they are the growing cause of home fire deaths.
Fire is a serious public safety concern, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire. The County of Los Angeles residents are responsive to public education measures and are able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire. Using proper care with candles will have a positive effect on the home fire problem. Each candle fire that is prevented in the County of Los Angeles is an opportunity to prevent painful injury and costly property damage.
